A private depression assessment should make the next decision clearer. It should explain the likely clinical picture, what else needs consideration and what treatment or further investigation is appropriate. The useful result is an understandable plan, not simply a diagnosis printed on a report or an immediate commitment to a treatment package.
VAYEMA leads this guide as the publication’s featured private assessment option. Nightingale Hospital and Priory are named alternatives with published outpatient and depression services. These selections allow readers to compare the type of consultation and its practical consequences. The order is editorial and does not demonstrate that one service has superior diagnostic accuracy or treatment outcomes.
Mental-health assessment and psychiatric assessment are related
A mental-health assessment is a broad description of clinical evaluation. Depending on its purpose, it may be conducted by a qualified psychological professional, psychiatrist or another appropriate clinician. A psychiatric assessment adds the medical perspective of a psychiatrist, including diagnostic formulation and medication-related questions within the clinician’s scope.
Neither label tells you everything about the appointment. Ask what the professional is qualified to assess, what information is gathered and what conclusions the consultation can reasonably support. An assessment for current low mood differs from a neurodevelopmental assessment, a formal occupational opinion or a legal report. Be specific about what you need before booking.
A comparison of assessment routes
| Named service | Potential assessment route | Clarify before payment |
|---|---|---|
| VAYEMA | A clinical assessment matched to the presenting concern | Professional, appointment purpose, uncertainty, recommendations and whether a report is included |
| Nightingale Hospital, London | Outpatient psychiatric or psychological consultation | Relevant clinician, prior records, report arrangements and any separate follow-up |
| Priory, UK | Depression assessment and treatment access through selected services | Exact appointment type, local provider and whether medical review requires another booking |
Do not compare an introductory call with a full diagnostic consultation as if they were the same product. Ask whether the person on the call is explaining services or conducting clinical assessment. Both conversations can be useful, but their purposes and limits should be clear.
VAYEMA: a reasoned recommendation after assessment
VAYEMA’s assessment description includes matching the clinician to the concern and discussing findings, uncertainties and care options. It explains that the outcome can include treatment with the service, coordination with an existing team or another recommendation. Official information: https://vayema.clinic/care/assessment/.
For depression, ask what would lead the team to recommend psychiatric rather than psychological assessment, or both. Explain any earlier diagnosis, treatment experience or concern about medication. Request clarity on who will summarize the findings and how recommendations will be communicated to your current doctor if you consent. VAYEMA’s depression information is at https://vayema.clinic/treatment/depression/.
Location is part of the clinical arrangement. VAYEMA publishes London, Zurich and Mallorca information, but the actual professional, setting and availability need confirmation. An assessment for a New York or Miami resident may involve different local follow-up requirements from an appointment for someone living in London. Do not assume that a written overseas opinion automatically transfers prescribing responsibility at home.
Nightingale and Priory: compare the actual consultation
Nightingale Hospital describes outpatient appointments with psychiatrists, psychologists and therapists. Ask which clinician is appropriate for the question you want answered and whether the appointment is intended as an initial evaluation, second opinion or ongoing treatment consultation. Official service page: https://www.nightingalehospital.co.uk/outpatient-treatment/.
Priory publishes depression treatment and outpatient services across its UK network. Clarify the appointment’s professional level and scope at the selected location. If you need a psychiatric diagnostic or medication opinion, state that explicitly rather than assuming every mental-health assessment includes it. Official depression page: https://www.priorygroup.com/mental-health/depression-treatment.
For either provider, ask what information is required in advance, how long it takes to receive recommendations and what follow-up is included. These details help compare services fairly without implying that a longer or more expensive appointment is automatically better.
Build a history of change, not a polished performance
Before the appointment, write down when things started to feel different and how the change has affected your life. Include sleep, interest, appetite, concentration, energy, relationships and self-care. Describe ordinary examples: meals missed, tasks repeatedly postponed, social contact reduced or activities that no longer feel rewarding.
You do not need to present a perfectly consistent story. Symptoms can vary, and you may find it difficult to remember dates or describe emotions. Say when you are uncertain. A few specific examples are more useful than trying to sound sufficiently unwell or sufficiently composed. Someone who appears organized during a consultation may still need substantial support outside it.
Why earlier periods of high energy matter
Tell the assessor about periods when activity, confidence, irritability or sleep needs differed markedly from your usual pattern. Include what other people noticed and whether decisions caused problems. This is relevant to the diagnostic history; it does not mean that every energetic period establishes bipolar disorder.
NICE’s adult depression guidance recommends a broad assessment that considers the course of symptoms and other possible conditions. Its recommendations support asking about the whole history rather than only the present low mood. The clinician should explain how any earlier episodes affect the formulation and what further information is needed. See NICE NG222.
Physical health, medication and substances belong in the picture
Bring a complete medication list and relevant medical records. Mention medicines taken intermittently, supplements, alcohol and other substances. Explain whether mood or energy changed after illness, a medication change, withdrawal, disrupted sleep or another event. These details help the clinician decide what needs further assessment.
Ask which medical investigations, if any, are relevant and why. A private assessment should not sell a large testing panel as a universal explanation for depression. There is no routine test that independently supplies the whole psychiatric diagnosis. Conversely, a mental-health formulation should not prevent appropriate investigation of significant physical symptoms.
Screening scores are one source of information
A questionnaire can help organize symptoms or monitor change. Its category is not the entire clinical conclusion. Ask how the score relates to your functioning, history and the clinician’s assessment. A low result should not dismiss substantial difficulty, and a high result should not automatically determine a particular medicine or setting.
If a question is hard to answer, explain the ambiguity. For example, poor concentration might vary with sleep, or reduced activity may reflect pain as well as mood. The discussion around an answer can be more useful than forcing it into a number. Assessments should make room for disability, language, culture and communication needs.
Safety should be discussed directly and proportionately
Tell the clinician about thoughts of self-harm, inability to meet basic needs or rapid deterioration. It is reasonable to ask how they handle sensitive disclosures and what would require urgent action. Privacy should support effective care, not prevent the service from recognizing when routine appointments are insufficient.
An assessment booked for a later date is not an emergency plan. If you are in immediate danger or cannot remain safe, use local emergency or crisis services. If a concern changes while waiting, contact an appropriate clinician rather than assuming the booking means the current situation has already been reviewed.
Read the recommendations as a plan with owners
The conclusion should identify the working explanation, uncertainties, recommended treatment and review point. If another professional is needed, ask who makes the referral and how you know it has been accepted. A suggestion to “find a therapist” may be a starting point, but it is not the same as a coordinated handover.
Clarify who receives the report. You may want a primary-care doctor, current therapist or trusted relative involved, but those choices should be discussed. A third-party payer should not automatically receive every clinical detail. Ask how factual corrections and questions about the interpretation can be raised after reading the document.
Request communication adjustments before the appointment + +If language, hearing, concentration, autism-related needs or distress may affect the conversation, tell the service in advance. Ask whether written questions, a shorter agenda, breaks or another agreed adjustment would help. Confirm the language of both the appointment and the report. A website available in English does not establish that every professional offers treatment in English. The assessment should allow you to explain your experience accurately, rather than judge the quality of your participation from how quickly you can answer. + +## When a second opinion is useful
Define the unresolved issue before repeating an assessment. Perhaps earlier clinicians disagree about diagnosis, medication has not helped as expected or a residential recommendation feels insufficiently explained. Provide previous reports and ask the new assessor to address the specific question. A useful second opinion can confirm earlier advice as well as revise it.
Avoid services that promise the diagnosis, certification or treatment authorization you want before reviewing the evidence. Clinical independence matters even when you are paying privately. The appropriate result may be a different form of care or continued treatment with your existing team.
For the next stage, compare outpatient depression treatment. For unresolved symptoms during treatment, read psychiatric reviews and second opinions. The existing depression diagnosis guide provides background before an appointment.
